Choosing between a Les Paul and an SG depends on personal preference, playing style and budget. Les Pauls are known for their thicker, warmer tone, while SGs offer a brighter, more cutting sound. We recommend trying out both models to determine which best suits your needs.

A History of the SG Guitar

The history of the SG guitar began in the early 1960s when Gibson sought to create a new design that would compete with the growing popularity of Fender guitars. Introduced in 1961 as a revamp of the Gibson Les Paul model, the SG (which stands for “Solid Guitar”) offered a sleeker, thinner body and a double-cutaway design that granted easier access to the higher frets. At first, the guitar retained the Les Paul name, but after a few years, Les Paul himself requested his name be removed from the instrument, as he was not involved in its design. Thus, the guitar officially became the Gibson SG in 1963.

The SG quickly gained popularity among guitarists due to its lightweight construction, unique appearance and versatile tonal range. As a result, it became one of Gibson’s best-selling models and famous musicians such as Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Angus Young of AC/DC and Derek Trucks of The Allman Brothers Band adopted it as their instrument of choice. The SG’s distinctive sound could be heard in various music genres, from hard rock and blues to jazz and pop.

Throughout its history, the SG has undergone numerous modifications and iterations, including the SG Standard, SG Special, SG Junior and various signature models. Additionally, Gibson’s sister company, Epiphone, also produces SG models at more accessible price points. Despite these changes, the core design of the SG remains largely unchanged, maintaining its iconic status among electric guitars. Today, the SG continues to be a go-to choice for guitarists worldwide, beloved for its sleek design, playability and roaring sound.
